It wasn’t until the early 90s that the LGBT rainbow pride flag we know today was truly established as the symbol for LGBTQ pride. With now having an even number of 6, the flag could be evenly split to line two sides of the street for pride. The reason for this collapse was mostly due to pricing and production issues. With the removal of pink, blue and turquoise were then merged into royal blue.
The first concept of the rainbow pride flag created by gilbert baker consisted of eight equally sized horizontal lines with different colours, each having their own symbolic meaning.īy 1979, the Pride flag had collapsed into the six colours. Originally created by Gilbert Baker in 1978, the rainbow pride flag has seen several revisions over the years, many of which we stock here at Joshua Lloyd alongside other pride products utilising different renditions of the flag. Also known as the gay pride flag, or LGBT pride flag, the colours reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. The rainbow pride flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT). The term LGBT is still used today, however most commonly people refer to the community as either LGBTQ, LGBTQIA, LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+ to be more inclusive.
However with such a more diverse spectrum of gender and sexual identities, the plus (+) was also added after the Q to become LGBTQ+. To increase inclusion and acceptance to the wider community, LGBTQ adds the letter Q for those who identify as queer or are questioning their sexual/gender identity.įurther including the letter I for intersex and later the letter A for asexual, the term LGBTQIA is also commonly used to describe the community further. LGBT may refer to anybody who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, instead of being exclusively to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The term has been used since the 1990s and functions as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identity. LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
